Dendrobates ventrimaculatus
Dendrobates ventrimaculatus represents a complex, diverse and sometimes controversial group of frogs.  They have a large but discontinuous distribution across South America, ranging from the Andes to the extent of the Amazon lowlands.  While Dendrobates amazonicus has been represented as an unique species, DNA evidence suggests that it is part of the 'ventrimaculatus complex' and hence we show the pictures of our amazonicus on this page.  Add to this complication the presence of multiple geographical isolates in the hobby and one can begin to understand the confusion surrounding these frogs.
Ventrimaculatus or vents for short are thumbnail frogs that do well in groups.  We obtained our standard vents from Quality Captives in early 2005 - the line traces back to Todd Kelley.  This group of 4 males and 1 female are housed in a 29 gallon vivarium that is very overgrown.  They have produced somewhere between 75 and 100 offspring and we quit pulling eggs from the viv because they were overwhelming us.  Our gold amazonicus are from Phil Tan and we have red amazonicus groups from both Phil Tan and Patrick Nabors.  In addition we have red vents from Patrick Nabors.  We have been able to breed both the red amazonicus and red vents to produce reasonable numbers of offspring.
