Epipedobates hahneli
Epipedobates hahneli are smaller frogs with adults running slightly under 1 inch long.  At first glance it would appear that they belong to the UBF (ugly brown frogs) group of dart frogs but more careful observation reveals the presence of flash marks on the hind legs and a bluish underside.  They are actually very cool little frogs and we are very fortunate that they are part of the Peruvian captive breeding program that has it's commercial outlet with Mark Pepper in Canada.  We have obtained six of the hahneli 'Iquitos' from him and they are still spending time in a 20 gallon long quarantine setup where they have increased in size and appear to be quite healthy.  They are somewhat difficult to capture on photographs so the photos here do not do them justice at all.

Update April 19, 2007 - These guys started breeding about 2 months ago and so far they have produced several good clutches of eggs.  The eggs are laid under the coco hut on a petri dish and guarded by the male while they develop.  The tadpoles are quite small, somewhat delicate and are growing quite slowly in contrast to our experience with other Epipedobates frogs.
