Epipedobates bassleri are found in Peru and can be considered medium to large size frogs. Females are larger than males and tend to be more secretive in the vivarium in our experience. In contrast the males will oftentimes be found calling out in the open. The bassleri call sounds a bit like like a clipped version of a trivittatus call. Our males tend to start calling about 1 hour before lights out and into the darkness and in the morning.
Both our bassleri morphs (black and yellow) have come from INIBICO via Sean Stewart. To learn more about INIBICO click here. To learn more about Sean Stewart click here. Our bassleri have bred so far under the cocohut where the male seizes the female from behind in the classic head amplexus. After the eggs are laid (typically 15-28 in a clutch), the male will guard them around the clock until they hatch, subsequently transporting them to water.
We keep our black bassleri in pairs in 29 gallon standard vivs, fairly well planted with a water bowl for tadpole deposition. However, we are considering experimenting with the yellow morph and placing our group of four frogs into a common 40 gallon breeder vivarium (36 x 18 inch footprint).
After a number of failed tadpole batches we have successfully morphed out a number of the black bassleri froglets. The new froglets are highly vulnerable to drowning in very little water so removal from the water source after the front legs have appeared has substantially reduced mortality.
